The Basic Facts On Chin Augmentation

Submitted by: Rena Graham

When your chin isn t giving you the kind of definition that you want, the best option for you is a cosmetic surgery, particularly a chin augmentation procedure. This improves the appearance of your chin by making it more defined and facially proportionate. But aside from that, there are also important facts that you need to assist you better in deciding whether you should proceed with it or not.

Another name for chin augmentation is genioplasty or augmentation mentoplasty.

In addition to improving the profile of your chin, a chin augmentation surgery also corrects birth defects and any trauma to the chin.

A consultation is always the right time to talk to your doctor to clarify and discuss matters regarding the procedure. You can even bring a photograph with you to show exactly what you want. Some surgeon will even take an x-ray of your face or chin to get a more detailed look on your facial dimensions and the extent of work that needs to be done.

If you have malocclusions of the teeth you may have to be advised to correct this first with a dental surgeon.

A person who has a weak chin which is overpowered by the nose or cheeks would benefit from this procedure.

There are various materials that can be used for chin implants. Materials can range from Silicone, Gore-Tex, or Merselene Mesh. The material for these implants is what you would consider to be biocompatible. This means that your body will not reject it.

The implant is designed to be porous in order for bones to grow into it holding it in place better, in addition to the titanium screws that hold it as well.

You can either be in a general anesthesia (especially if done with other procedures such as a facelift) or a local anesthesia with IV sedation.

There are two ways that a chin augmentation procedure can be done. One would be to make an incision in the area where the edge of the gums and skin meet. This is called the hidden approach because the scars will not be visible. The other one is called the skin approach because the incision is made on the area below the chin. Although it may be done outside, this can be well concealed with good technique.

Sometimes the surgeon may make alterations to the jaw by chiselling or cutting to shape and position it better together with the implant.

The incision will then be closed using sutures and then covered with a sterile bandage.

The surgery can take 30 minutes to two hours depending on the amount of work that needs to be done.

After a chin augmentation surgery, you may feel some pain which can easily be alleviated by prescribed pain medications. There will also be some swelling and bruising at the area, which usually lasts for a week.

You can ask your doctor whether he clears you in using Arnica Montana or Bromelain which was known to effectively reduce swelling and bruising.

The sutures will be removed between 3-5 days sometimes even up to 10 depending on the surgeon s assessment and the speed of your tissue healing.

You can return to normal activities within a week or two, but it is best to hold off on active sports.

You can appreciate results once the swelling fully subsides.
