Replacing Windows In Your Home Saves You Money

Submitted by: Lawrence Reaves

If you have noticed that your heating and cooling bills are rising, it could be that your windows are a factor. This can be especially true in older homes. Older window products do not seal in heat and cold as well as some of the newer products on the market.

People tend to think that it is time to replace your windows in the summertime when the weather is good. However, many people first consider replacing them in the winter when a room feels cold or they feel a draft around a window. They usually think that they need to wait until summer to replace the windows. This is not really true.

With all of the increasing fuel prices in the United States these days, windows that are not insulated right can really cost you a lot of money. It actually can be a smart thing to replace the windows in the winter time when you first start to notice the problem. There are two advantages to doing this.

First of all, you are going to save on your heating bills this winter right in front of you. That obviously is very attractive. The other thing to keep in mind is that it is often very wise to buy major home products and services in the off season. Very few people tend to replace their windows in the winter time, because it just seems to make sense to do it when it is warm. It is true that you will experience a bit more inconvenience with replacing windows in cold weather. But if you can save money, why not? The fact is that many window contractors do not have a lot of business in the winter. They will probably be more eager to do your job at a reduced price. We have seen some window contractors drop their price by 20% in January or February! That is quite a deal.

If you think it might be time to replace your windows, you should keep a few things in mind. You should take a look at both the inside and outside finishes around your windows. See if there is any paint flaking. Peeling also can be a problem. Also, be sure to check the stripping around your windows. You should be sure to put back on any portions of the weather stripping that are loose.

Also, if you see any condensation between the panes of glass in your windows, this means that the seal between the panes is failing. You may want to consider replacing the windows that are doing this.

Also, you should check for any drafts around your windows. If your windows were not installed right, or are very old, they may be allowing air to leak around them. And always remember that new window products are much more energy efficient than windows made even 10 years ago.

We hope that you are able to make a good decision on whether or not to replace your windows this season. Remember that the savings can be substantial on your energy bills, often 15% or more per year.
