Recovery After Rhinoplasty: 5 Post Nose Surgery Questions}

Submitted by: Dr Ahnsup Kim

After the rhinoplasty surgery, there may be times when you encounter unexpected problems that you might not be prepared of. So to help you out on this here are five questions that might give you the answers that you need to ensure that you heal properly.

Will using Accutane after rhinoplasty affect the results?

It is recognized that using Accutane (isotretinoin) can delay skin healing for procedures such as peels or microdermabrasions. But there is no sufficient evidence on its effects when it comes to open wounds such as those in surgical rhinoplasties. However, sources do show that it affects wound contraction which interferes with the normal healing process. But the reactions are not the same for all patients. So for those who are dealing with acne through Accutane, some surgeons would advise the patient to wait for 6 months before resuming it and not to wait any longer than 12 months. Basically, it is safe to use it until the wounds have finally closed.

In my rhinoplasty procedure I had the surgeon fix a hump on my nose, but it is still visible even after weeks after surgery, what do I do?

The final result of rhinoplasty surgery is not readily visible after a few weeks, so you may want to put off any plans for revisions for a while. Any humps, swelling or asymmetry may still be visible for a couple of weeks, but may actually resolve in a couple of months. Most surgeons would suggest that you wait 6-12 months before you consult for a revision. But if you find anything that concerns you, never hesitate to ask your surgeon about it.

How do I clean my nose after the surgery without the risk of messing it up?

Sometimes the nose can get stuffed with crusts of blood and some dirt. The best way to clean it without causing any damage to your nose is to use Q-tips. There are even nasal antiseptic sprays that can be used along with this to provide moisture inside which promotes easier removal of the dirt. You may need to use this for at least 6-9 months. But you need to ask your surgeon about any concerns and to make sure that he clears you on this.

Another reminder is to avoid blowing your nose too hard if you dont want to create trauma to your nose, especially around those early months after the surgery.

What is causing my nasal swelling which persists even after a year post-surgery?

It is normal for swelling to resolve after a couple of months, and sometimes even reaching up to a year. But if you see that there is no improvement in the degree of swelling and it continues on even after a year, there is a good chance that this might be caused by airborne or food allergies. But to make sure that you get an accurate assessment, you need to consult your surgeon or maybe an allergist about this.

What are Kenalog injections, and how will they help me post rhinoplasty?

Kenalog injection is a synthetic anti-corticosteroid which is used as an anti-inflammatory agent thus preventing the chances of scar formation after rhinoplasty surgery. Steroids will always have their side effect that is why you should always use it with caution and ask your surgeons advice about it. Kenalog creams may be used but they are not as effective as the injectable.
